May/June 2014 Updates

Download Festival
Just got back from playing the almight Download Festival with my band Ducking Punches. It was truly one of the best experiences I've had and it will be a weekend that I won't ever forget. You can check out some pictures taken by Steven Haddock at http://www.stevenhaddock.co.uk/blog
It was also a great opportunity to check out some other amazing bands with some incredible drummers. Here were my top 3 favourite performances, you should check these players out if you haven't come across them before.
1) Dan Foord (SikTh) Incredible technical skills and speed.
2) Tal Bergman (Joe Bonamassa) Full of grooves and chops.
3) Eloy Casagrande (Sepultura) Heavy, fast and tight as hell.

Revello - EP Recording Session
My good friend and Block Fort band mate Liam Pritchett asked me to record a couple of songs for his acoustic folk EP, so on the 25th May we headed into my studio to work out parts and record in the space of a day. We decided to go for a real stripped back approach and set up kick, snare and cymbals to keep a lo-fi vibe. This was the first piece of recording that I had done since getting my Tiki snare and I was bowled away by how great it sounded. Both of the tracks have come out great and I'm hoping it will have been released in time for my next update!

  For this session I used:
Gretsch Renown Maple kick (18")
Tiki Zebra wood custom snare (14"x6")
Zildjian A Customs cymbals
Remo Coated Emperors

Teaching
Elsewhere, my 'day-job' of teaching has continued to grow to the point that I now have a pretty lengthy waiting list. I have finally just about finished my entire syllabus, it's taken around 3 years, but this now covers everything you need to know to get you through from being a total beginner up to Grade 8 and beyond. It revolves around handout sheets and play-along MP3 tracks. It's been truly inspiring to watch my students grow and progress as drummers and I hope that I am helping them all on their way to be confident and musical players.
